Kericho County Forge Ahead Strong Athletic Team for Regional Championships Competitions.
During the training at Kericho Green Stadium,
Kericho
team coach Sammy Bii hinted that they are well prepared to participate
in South Rift Regional championship set to take place in Narok county on
10th June,2023. It is by a whisker that this county has failed to be
involved in Olympic games both locally and internationally by providing
either athletes or coaches.
The upcoming events
will be a no short of variety of teams comprising a total number of six
counties in South Rift region, namely (Kericho, Bomet, Narok, Kajiado,
Nakuru and Laikipia counties).
“We have fully
prepared a strong united team of sixty-two athletes, which will be
representing Kericho county in the staged Regional championships. We
also have ten officials inclusive of a doctor who will take care of any
impromptu illness during the competition,” said Sammy Bii, Kericho
Coach.
He further stated that, the county
government has provided them with bus to carter for their transportation
to and fro. The athletes have also been budgeted for good balanced diet
food.
Every Tuesday and Thursday athletes
avail themselves in the field, Kericho Green stadium from 6.30AM to
10.00AM for training and practices which they believe they are essential
for their physicality and development. The training sessions, it is
not only the athletes alone, but due to team work, their coaches ensure
that each and every step they cover together.
The
coaches also play important role not only in training the athletes but
also counselling them in matters of their social lives and financial
usage, where Sammy Bii exhorted his athletes to adopt sustainable ways
of living.
In addition, Kericho Marathoners
prospected to extend their fate to engage the community by helping them
in form of providing the vulnerable members with food and clothing. ‘‘We
are targeting a motivating factor to assist churches within Kericho
county to get good chairs,’’ added Bii.
Some of
the challenges faced by the athletes as Paul Tanui one of the
professional athletes highlighted involves; poor housing, financial
status, facilities used during training are major concerns. Athletes
sometimes miss to attend training due to the challenges they face
individually.
In the cases of use of drugs i.e.
doping which is one of the serious issues affecting Kenyan Olympic
games. Tanui urged his teammates to evade any indulgence into such to
ensure that they continue as a team making Kericho county and Kenya at
large scaled up to its highest zenith in Olympics.
