Kericho county governor Dr.Erick Mutai call for professionalism in Cooperative societies & Sacco's in order to manage parts of county salaries.

Kericho County governor Dr. Erick Mutai, call for Cooperatives and Sacco’s to professionalize and be able to manage parts of County salaries.

The first cooperative union in the history of Kenya to export coffee to South Korea was Kipkelion union, which started in the year 1908 due to dream to put together efforts in realizing the cooperative dreams.

Kericho County “101 Ushirika Day” consolidated different cooperatives and Sacco’s which all showcased a vibrant synergy with their representation during the celebrations at Kericho Primary & Junior Secondary School.
The occasion brought together Chai Sacco Society Limited, Kenya Highlands Sacco, Ndege Chai Housing Sacco, Imarisha Sacco Society Limited, Kabianga Dairy Farmers, Kabianga University Sacco, Siloam Hospital, Mwalimu Sacco, and Stima Sacco among other stakeholders.

Dr.Michael Bett, who is the chief executive officer-Livestock & Cooperatives in Kericho, mentioned that the importance of them coming together is an added advantage to be ideally accepted by government administration and even portraying a wish image of a society. 

“I urge all the members of these esteemed unions to be steadfast at all circumstance, in order for us to spur our pursuit of professionalism and accountability in credit lending, training, homes building, farm input provision and other effective services at large”. Said Dr. Bett.

While speaking on the Ushirika Day, Mr. Bernard Koros who’s the chairperson Ndege Chai Sacco hinted that they have been battling challenges of defaulting by debtor’s drastic change of membership from this Sacco to another which denies them breakthrough to gains.

Madam Edna Chepkwony, from housing and lands cooperatives (Ndege Chai Housing) said that they are strengthening the housing livelihoods by providing credible and affordable houses and lands to customers.

“We enable customers to assess and we protect them from risks. If you look at the database of SASFRA; 33% -lands and housing, 21% - education, 13% - agriculture while the remaining 33% goes to other lending models”. Said Md. Edna.

Speaking at the event, Kericho County governor Dr. Erick Mutai reiterated that they welcome all cooperative societies and Sacco’s to partner with county government in order to accelerate a faster eradication of poverty in the county.

“We have plentiful of land resources in Kericho and we are ready to give to the accountable unions to make business, utilize the lands in farming of tea,coffee,sugarcane in all our constituencies, and we are happy that our county legislators are members of these societies. Again we call for societies to professionalize and manage parts of our salaries, I can announce that your partners including Mwalimu Sacco are already doing that as this will enable us a lasting cooperation.” Said governor Mutai.

He also used that umbrella to urge all the incorporated groups to align with the government progress in leveraging digital spaces hinting it is the only way to curtail unworthy intermediaries and enhance market reach and visibilities. He promised a budgetary allocation for the construction of a milk processing plant.

Dr. Mutai on the same note, conveyed heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the victims claimed by the horrific Londiani Junction accident on Friday 30th June, 2023 and he assured the county on deliberate resolutions to curb such carnages. He also wished those ongoing with treatments quick recoveries, confirming a sorrow death toll to be at 52 persons as on Saturday morning.

Ushirika Committee chairperson Dr. Ng’eno also presented all the Cooperatives & Sacco’s, with decorated trophies for their unwavering contribution to the development mentioning that their objective of coming together is bound to sharing notes, echoing the gaps that needs to be alleviated in order to expedite a better future. He hails all the unions for taking bold steps to ensure adequate food production.

“This joint meeting will not only give us a compliance synergy but creates the best chunk in economic growth as we are the interrelated cooperative sustainable accelerators internationally and locally. Let us raise the bar of societies and trades high. Also as we celebrate today we have union’s segregation as follows 12 in Belgut, 29 in Sigowet, 25 in Ainamoi totaling to 66 in three constituencies.” Said Dr. Ng’eno.

The deliberate actions of these trade unions, Sacco’s and cooperative societies are upfront in ensuring that Kenya gets good services and accelerate the eradication of poverty. As the “101 Ushirika Day” celebrations be customized, we have put our nation at position 1 in Africa and 7 worldwide in terms of viable cooperative societies, Sacco’s and unions.
